There are many communities throughout Ireland. And within these communities are the tales and stories of its people, culture and heritage. For the most part, this history is often hidden and just out of sight from public view.

Charlemont Street is one such community, and within it and its surrounding area is a steeped and proud history. From the early exploits of the Irish Citizen Army and their shoot-out with the Forces of the Crown in Davy’s pub. To the achievements of Dr.Kathleen Lynn and Madeline fFrench Mullen. And to its former resident, revolutionary socialist republican, and signatory of the 1916 proclamation, James Connolly.

The Centenary of 1916 has brought an opportunity for the residents of Charlemont Street, and people further afield, to remember the sacrifice made by the brave men and women who gave their lives in defence of the Irish Republic. And to remember too, the civilians who were killed around the area.

Here we aim to bring some of that history to light.

Uncovering hidden history is paramount to keeping alive the memories of those who died for the preservation of the ideals of this country. This website has aimed to highlight a piece of that history which would otherwise be forgotten.

A citizen’s initiative led by the residents of Charlemont Street, and further afield, is called for to help preserve and revive the community’s history, heritage and culture.  Big plans to have a whole festival with music, food, invited speakers, as well as some memorabilia on display from 1916 to coincide with details for a plaque unavailing for James Connolly on Charlemont Street, and another plaque for the civilians killed around the area, are to be announced soon. As well as a host of talks and seminars based around the 1916 Easter Revolution, in the local community centre in Tom Kelly Flats.
